Ecstatic Dance Festival, 1 and 2 May 2026: Two Days of Movement, Music and Fire
9 May 2026 · The Samyama Team

On 1 and 2 May 2026, Samyama hosted an Ecstatic Dance Festival that drew together dancers, musicians, fire performers and friends from across the community. Over two days of movement, sound and shared presence, the floor stayed open from morning ceremony through to fire by night. What follows is a brief look back, told as much through the images as through the words.
A ceremonial opening
Each day opened slowly. Before any music began, the Nataraja Shala held a quiet cacao ceremony, a way of arriving properly, of letting the noise of getting here settle before stepping onto the floor. Cups were passed by hand, words were few, and the room gradually moved from arrival into attention.
There is something about beginning this way that shapes everything that follows. By the time the first notes were played on each of the two mornings, the space already felt held.
Live music by day, DJs by night
The afternoons were carried by live musicians playing in conversation with the room. The sound moved between gentle, almost meditative passages and longer, more rhythmic builds, with the dancers responding in kind. As the light dropped and the evenings drew in, the DJs took to the decks and the floor shifted into a deeper, more sustained groove.
It is a particular kind of attention that develops across a day like this. In the afternoon the musicians watch the floor and the floor listens back; by night the DJs read the room and carry it forward, and the music itself becomes part of the practice rather than a backdrop to it.
Community, food and the spaces in between
A festival is not only what happens on the dance floor. The hours between sets, eating together in the eatery, resting in the shade, the small unscripted exchanges between people who may have only just met, were as much a part of the two days as the movement itself.
These quieter intervals gave each day its shape, and made it possible to keep going for as long as we did.
Into the ecstatic groove
As we moved into the evening, the floor found its full ecstatic dance groove. Bodies loosened, the music deepened, and the room moved as one current; some dancers travelling inward, others letting it out fully, and many simply giving themselves over to the rhythm. Pairs found each other in passing, circles formed and dissolved, and the energy kept rising in waves.
Nothing about it was performed. People danced as they needed to, and the floor carried whatever each person brought to it.
Fire by night
After dark, the energy shifted. The fire performers stepped in, and each day moved into its final chapter, sustained, focused, and quietly intense. Watching skilled fire work at close range has its own kind of stillness; the room tends to go quiet around it.
It was a fitting close to two long days, and a clear reminder of the level of practice and care these performers bring.
Looking back
The Ecstatic Dance Festival was never about producing a particular outcome. It was two days given over to live music, free movement and the people who showed up for it, and the days looked after themselves from there.
Our thanks go to the musicians, the fire artists, the support team and everyone who arrived ready to be part of it. The next gathering of this kind will be shared through our Experiences page when dates are confirmed.
