What Is Ecstatic Dance? Finding Freedom Through Movement
7 July 2026 · The Samyama Team

Not everyone arrives at an Ecstatic Dance feeling completely at ease.
For many, the first few minutes can feel unfamiliar. There are no steps to follow, no choreography to learn and no expectation that anyone should move in a particular way. The invitation is simply to listen to the music, notice your body and begin wherever feels natural.
That can take courage.
Many of us spend our lives thinking about how we appear to other people. Ecstatic Dance gently offers something different. As the music unfolds and people become absorbed in their own movement, self-consciousness often begins to soften. The need to perform gives way to something much simpler: the experience of being fully present. As the rhythm changes, so too does the movement. Sometimes the music invites energy, celebration and freedom. At other moments it becomes quieter, slower and almost meditative. There is no right way to dance, only an invitation to respond honestly to whatever the music awakens within you.
An Ancient Human Rhythm
For some, this feels deeply personal. Others describe it as reconnecting with something ancient. Human beings have gathered around rhythm, music and movement for thousands of years. Across cultures, dance has been used to celebrate, to grieve, to heal and to bring communities together. Whether or not we think of it in spiritual terms, many people find that moving freely with others awakens a sense of connection that is difficult to explain but instantly recognisable.
Solitude and Community on the Same Floor
One of the beautiful qualities of Ecstatic Dance is that it creates space for both solitude and community. You may spend much of the evening immersed in your own experience, discovering what it feels like to move without judgement or expectation. At other moments you may share a dance with another person. Within conscious dance spaces these interactions are approached with respect and awareness. Invitations can always be accepted or declined, allowing everyone to participate in a way that feels safe and comfortable.
Because the environment is intentionally alcohol and drug free, the experience is shaped by presence rather than intoxication. The music becomes the catalyst. The movement becomes the expression. The community becomes the container. Many people discover that this creates a surprising sense of freedom, where the body can simply move without worrying how it looks or whether it is "doing it right."
Fire, Flow Arts and the Open-Air Stage
At Samyama, the Wednesday evening gathering has gradually become more than simply a dance. It has evolved into a conscious community event where different forms of movement and creativity naturally come together. Alongside the dancing in the Nataraja Shala, the adjacent open-air performance space becomes home to Samyama's growing Flow Arts and fire dancing community.
As darkness falls, performers take to the open stage with fire staffs, poi and other flow arts, moving in harmony with the music while participants pause to watch, absorb the atmosphere or continue dancing nearby. The crackle of the flames, the warmth of the fire and the mesmerising flow of the performers add another dimension to the evening. Rather than feeling like a separate performance, it becomes another expression of the same spirit of presence, creativity and embodied movement.
Nearby, people gather around the fire pit, sharing conversations, resting between dances or simply enjoying the warmth of the evening beneath the Bali sky. Some people dance for hours. Others move between the dance floor, the fire performances and quieter moments of reflection. There is no expectation to participate in any particular way. The invitation is simply to find your own rhythm and discover what the evening offers you.
After Movement, Integration
As the night gently draws towards its conclusion, the energy naturally begins to soften. Participants are invited to lie down or sit comfortably as live music, sound and gentle guidance create space for integration and rest. After movement comes stillness. After expression comes quiet reflection. Many people leave feeling calmer, more grounded and more connected than when they first arrived.
A Rhythm Within Life
For those who return regularly, Ecstatic Dance often becomes much more than a Wednesday evening activity. It becomes a rhythm within life itself. A place to step away from the demands of the week, reconnect with the body, experience conscious community and remember that some of life's deepest conversations happen without words.
Whether you arrive with friends or come on your own, the invitation remains beautifully simple: come as you are, move in whatever way feels true, and allow the music, the community and the evening itself to guide the experience.
Every Wednesday evening, Samyama opens this space to anyone who is curious to explore movement, connection and conscious community in the heart of Ubud.
