    Private Addiction Retreat

    Looking Beneath the Behaviour

Three full retreat days · four nights · private, personalised and carefully held

    It Began as a Strategy

Addiction and compulsive behaviour rarely begin as conscious decisions to damage our lives. Often, they begin as strategies.

Ways of changing how we feel. Managing pain. Escaping anxiety. Finding stimulation. Numbing something difficult. Creating connection. Avoiding loneliness. Or simply getting through experiences that, at the time, we did not know how else to hold.

Over time, the strategy can begin to create problems of its own.

The Private Addiction Retreat at Samyama creates three days away from the patterns and pressures of everyday life to begin looking beneath the behaviour itself. Rather than beginning with shame or judgement, we begin with curiosity.

What is this behaviour doing for me? And eventually: what might I actually need?

The retreat can be undertaken alone, as a couple, with a family member or as a closely connected private group of up to four people. For an individual, the programme can be shaped completely around your own experience.

For partners or families affected by addiction or compulsive behaviour, the work can also include the relationships surrounding it: trust, communication, boundaries, fear, hurt, responsibility and connection.

Not everything needs to happen together. Individual and shared work can be used according to what is appropriate for the people involved.

    How the work is held

    A Carefully Held Container

Deep addiction work can touch fear, shame, grief, relationships and experiences that have been avoided for a long time. For that reason, this retreat is not designed around three days of relentless emotional intensity.

The rhythm matters. We repeatedly move between embodiment, exploration, regulation and integration. We pay attention to what is happening psychologically, but also to what is happening in the body.

When activation rises, we notice it. When something needs space, we allow space. When enough has been done for one session, we do not assume that pushing harder must produce a better result.

Safety and regulation are part of the work.

    Morning

    Returning to the Body

Each day begins with a 90-minute yoga and embodied-awareness practice.

For someone who has become accustomed to escaping or altering difficult internal states, simply remaining present with the body can itself be significant. We begin to notice breathing, sensation, tension and emotional state without immediately needing to change them.

No previous yoga experience is necessary. This is not about performance. It is about learning to notice what is happening before automatically responding to it.

    Midday

    Private Addiction Work

At the centre of each day are two hours of facilitated private addiction work, divided into two sessions with space between them.

The behaviour matters. But we are also interested in the landscape beneath it.

Elements of Shadow Work and Jungian thinking may help reveal aspects of ourselves that have been hidden or rejected. Sometimes the work reveals how unsafe a younger part of ourselves once felt. Sometimes we recognise how fear or shame has influenced behaviour for years. Sometimes we begin facing consequences that have become difficult to look at: damaged trust, a relationship, financial problems or a life that has gradually become smaller.

And sometimes the discovery is quieter. A person may realise how long it has been since they genuinely enjoyed walking, nature, conversation or simply being present without needing to alter how they feel. The work follows what is actually there.

Depending upon the person, this might include

    • Emotional triggers
    • Fear and shame
    • Inner child experiences and safety
    • Loneliness and disconnection
    • Relationships
    • Grief
    • Identity and self-worth
    • Avoidance
    • The need for stimulation or escape
    • Compulsive patterns
    • Consequences that have become difficult to face

    Coming together

When You Come With Someone Close

Addiction rarely exists entirely in isolation. Partners and families can become caught in patterns around fear, rescue, secrecy, control, anger, withdrawal and loss of trust.

A private retreat allows some of those patterns to be explored without making one person “the problem”. Where appropriate, there can be individual sessions alongside carefully facilitated shared work.

A partner may need space for their experience. A family member may carry fear or hurt that has never been spoken. The person struggling with the behaviour may begin to hear the impact differently when shame and accusation are not dominating the conversation.

The intention is not forced disclosure or confrontation. It is to create conditions in which greater honesty and understanding can become possible.

    Afternoon

    Regulation Before More Analysis

Each afternoon includes a 90-minute Yoga Nidra and nervous system regulation session. This is an essential part of the programme.

Deep personal work can create significant physiological and emotional activation. Continually pushing further without allowing the nervous system to settle can become counterproductive. So we deliberately stop.

Through Yoga Nidra, breathing, awareness and regulation practices, the body is given time to process what has emerged.

Over three days, participants can begin developing greater awareness of their own nervous system and recognising what happens internally before an automatic behaviour takes over.

    Evening

    Remembering Other Ways to Feel

Every evening includes a curated restorative experience.

There is an important idea behind this part of the retreat. When compulsive behaviour has occupied a large part of life, it can become easy to forget that pleasure, calm, connection and meaningful experience can come from very simple places.

An evening does not always need to be analysed. Sometimes we can simply experience it.

    This may include

    • Sound Healing
    • Reiki
    • Therapeutic Massage
    • Meditation
    • Breathwork
    • Fire Circle
    • Other Samyama experiences

    Final Evening

    Water Ceremony

The final evening concludes with a Water Ceremony. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge what has been seen, what may be ready to change and what you wish to carry forward.

Three days do not erase everything that came before them. Nor should they pretend to.

The ceremony marks the end of the retreat while recognising that the deeper journey continues afterwards.

    Who Is This Retreat For?

You do not need to arrive with a label.

The retreat may be relevant to people experiencing difficulties around alcohol or substances, but compulsive patterns can also develop around work, relationships, sex, pornography, gambling, digital behaviour, food, validation and many other ways of repeatedly seeking escape, stimulation or emotional regulation.

    • You may simply recognise that something you once chose increasingly feels as though it is choosing you.
    • You may want to understand what a behaviour is doing for you rather than simply trying to stop it.
    • You may be a partner or family member wanting to understand the patterns you have become caught in.
    • You may want private, confidential work rather than a group programme.
