    Private Men's Retreat

Space to step away from the roles you carry and explore what rarely gets your attention.

Three full retreat days · Four nights · A Private Retreat for one to four men

Space to Examine the Man You Have Become

Many men become extremely capable at getting on with life. We work. Solve problems. Provide. Build. Compete. Protect. Carry responsibility. Keep moving.

And sometimes, somewhere amongst all of that, we lose contact with parts of ourselves we rarely make time to examine. Who have I become? What shaped me? What am I still carrying? What happens to me under pressure? What kind of relationships am I creating? And what do I want the next part of my life to look like?

Men's Work is not about somebody teaching you how to be a man.

It is an opportunity to create enough space to examine the man you have become, and to give attention to the parts of ourselves that ordinary life leaves little time to explore.

    Who comes

Who Comes on a Private Men's Retreat?

There is no single type of man for whom this work is intended.

A man might come alone because something in his life feels ready for attention. Two brothers might come because they share a history but have rarely explored how differently they experienced it.

A father and adult son may want to understand each other beyond the roles they have occupied for years. Close friends may realise they know almost everything about each other's careers and almost nothing about what each is actually carrying.

Other men arrive at moments of transition: separation, fatherhood, career change, loss, retirement, ageing or simply the recognition that something in the life they have built deserves attention.

Because the retreat is entirely private, there is no group of strangers to impress, and no expectation that you arrive already comfortable talking about deeply personal things. It can be taken alone, or with up to four men who already share a meaningful connection.

You do not need a crisis to do this work. Curiosity is enough.
An embodied morning practice in the open air at Samyama, Ubud

    Morning

Out of the Head and Into the Body

Many of us become skilled at analysing, rationalising, planning, solving and explaining. The body often knows something is happening before we have words for it.

Each day therefore begins with a 90-minute yoga and embodied practice.

We begin noticing breathing, tension, sensation and emotional state without immediately turning them into another problem to solve. Where do you tighten when you feel uncomfortable? What does anger actually feel like before it becomes an argument? What happens physically when you feel exposed, rejected or uncertain?

The intention is not athletic performance; it is awareness.

    Midday

    Private Men's Work

Each day includes two hours of facilitated Men's Work, divided into two focused sessions. There is no rigid curriculum because the work follows the man or men who arrive.

For men attending together, the existing relationship becomes part of the opportunity. Brothers may see old family roles differently. A father and son may hear something from each other that has never previously found the right moment to be spoken. Friends may discover that honesty creates connection rather than threatening it.

There can be seriousness in this work. There can also be enormous humour, relief, warmth and joy. Men's work does not need to be heavy in order to be meaningful.

    Possible areas of exploration include

    • Fear, shame, anger and grief
    • Relationships and intimacy
    • Emotional expression
    • Responsibility and boundaries
    • Work, achievement and status
    • Fatherhood
    • Friendship and brotherhood

    Afternoon

    Learning Not to Push

Another familiar masculine strategy is to push harder when something becomes difficult. This retreat deliberately offers another possibility.

After the deeper work of the day, each afternoon includes 90 minutes of Yoga Nidra and nervous system regulation. There is nothing else to achieve. The invitation is to stop, notice and allow the nervous system to settle.

Rest itself can become unfamiliar territory for men accustomed to measuring themselves through output. Learning that integration sometimes requires doing less rather than more can become a valuable part of the experience.

    Evening

    Experience Without Performance

The evening shifts the energy again.

Some of these may be experiences a man would never ordinarily choose for himself. That is partly the point. The retreat creates permission to encounter different ways of slowing down, receiving, connecting and simply being.

There is also time for good food, conversation, laughter, quiet and friendship.

Depending upon the retreat, curated experiences may include

    • Sound Healing
    • Reiki
    • Therapeutic Massage
    • Meditation
    • Breathwork
    • Fire Circle
    • Fire Dancing
    • Other Samyama experiences

    Final Evening

    Water Ceremony

On the final evening, a Water Ceremony marks the closing of the three-day journey.

It creates a moment to acknowledge what has been explored, what you may no longer wish to carry in the same way and what kind of man you want to be as you return to ordinary life.
